The removal and construction of the new replacement Eastern span of the Bay Bridge was due mostly in response to the October 17, 1989 6.9 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Construction of the new self-anchored suspension (SAS) bridge began on January 29, 2002 and opened on September 2, 2013, costing $6.5 Billion dollars. Total length of the bridge is 2.2 miles with a width of 258.33 feet (10 lanes plus shoulders), a height of 525 feet, vehicle clearance of 191 feet, and a load limit of 500,000 lbs. Estimated traffic on the bridge is 270,000 vehicles per day. It’s amazing to see how the roadways are not directly connected to the center tower pier in any structural fashion, but are, as the term suspension bridge implies, suspended and hung from the top of the tower by massive cables to the outer edges of the roads. There is a pedestrian/bike path along the south side of the bridge that runs from Oakland around the South end of the Ikea building to Yerba Buena Island. The bike ride is exhilarating, with the bridge traffic zooming by you juxtaposed to the calm picturesque panoramic views of a lot of San Francisco and most of the East Bay. And even though the logical separation of San Francisco and the East Bay would be at Yerba Buena Island, the entire suspended portion of the new Bay Bridge sits within the limits of San Francisco County.

The eastern span replacement of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge was a construction project to replace a seismically unsound portion of the Bay Bridge with a new self-anchored suspension bridge (SAS) and a pair of viaducts. The bridge is in the U.S. state of California and crosses the San Francisco Bay between Yerba Buena Island and Oakland. The span replacement took place between 2002 and 2013, and is the most expensive public works project in California history, with a final price tag of $6.5 billion, a 2,500% cost overrun from the original estimate of $250 million. Originally scheduled to open in 2007, several problems delayed the opening until September 2, 2013. With a width of 258.33 ft (78.74 m), comprising 10 general-purpose lanes, it is the world’s widest bridge according to Guinness World Records. The Bay Bridge has two major sections: the western suspension spans and their approach structures between San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island (YBI) and the structures between YBI and the eastern terminus in Oakland. The original eastern section was composed of a double balanced cantilever span, five through-truss spans, and a truss causeway. This part became the subject of concern after a section collapsed during the Loma Prieta earthquake on October 17, 1989. The replacement span is engineered to withstand the largest earthquake expected over a 1500-year period, and it is expected to last at least 150 years with proper maintenance. -wikipedia

We also sell canvas prints, metal prints, and more. All of our premium papers and canvases are acid-free and, with proper care, will last for generations. Unframed prints are shipped in sturdy 1/4″ cardboard tubes and include a 1″ white border to allow for future matting and framing. Prints may also be shipped in flat packaging upon request. METAL PRINTS are printed directly onto a sheet of 1/16″ thick aluminum! The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4″ thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. The wooden frame on the back of the print includes a hanging wire for easy mounting on your wall. All metal prints arrive “ready to hang” with mounting hooks and nails. Metal prints are extremely durable. They’re lightweight. They won’t bend, and they’re water resistant. The high gloss of the aluminum sheet complements the rich colors of any image to produce stunning results.
