San Francisco’s rich diversity doesn’t just stop with it’s people. Like everything else, that diversity translates to its architecture as well. From Classical architecture of the Palace of Fine Arts to Victorian architecture of Alamo Square to Art Deco of the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, and to the streamline architecture of Financial District High Rises. The City’s architectural delight is a real treasure cherished by locals as well as those who visit the City from around the world. At the same time, that treasure can sometimes be overwhelming, it’s a visual smorgasbord where one dish overlaps the other and soon all its flavors become lost. But intertwined in all this visual orgy of the mind is the common basic elements of geometry that can easily be extracted and appreciated. Geometry is all around us, everywhere you look, from the mundane rows of houses to parked cars along a street, the underlying geometry is there if you look. And for architecture, this collection of geometric architectural shapes and details inevitably make up the entirety of the design, whether it was originally intended or not. As an artist and photographer, I oftentimes walk the streets of San Francisco (see my “San Francisco Bay Area Through The Eyes of a Local Artist and Photographer” Series) and find the beauty of the City’s geometrical shapes through my camera’s lens onto my camera’s view finder and into my eyes and soul. I seldom go looking for them, they tend to find me once I start to adjust my eyes to the elegance of this simplicity of San Francisco’s complexities, much like when your eyes eventually adjust to the darkness of night. It helps if you carry a zoom lens on these occasions. A zoom lens allows you to see and photograph the bigger picture, but where the fun lies is when you find a form or detail that takes on a whole other fascinating geometric shape up close and personal with your zoom lens (see my blog “What’s In Your Camera Bag?”). They become a modern form of artistic expression where that geometric form becomes intellectually and aesthetically bigger than the entire architecture itself. This is definitely the case where the individual pieces become much bigger than the sum total! The architect Louis Sullivan coined the maxim, “Form follows function.” And when the simple elegance of forms can be broken back down to basic geometry, it becomes nothing less than a purity of artistic expression at its highest level.
