The news on coronavirus and its wide reach magnitude is nothing most of us, myself included, has ever experienced in our lifetime! END NEWS FLASH
Major League Baseball MLB Opening Day will be on March 26, 2020. Are you excited? Are you ready? No doubt the Coronavirus will be a major concern not only for MLB, but for any place where large crowds gather. Some European soccer leagues have already banned fans from their games. What!? No fans? That’s not only inconceivable, but truly surreal to play a major sporting event without fans. It’s sacrileges! Locally, the San Jose Sharks and the Golden State Warriors are in discussion about banning fans too. MLB recently announced they will not allow the media into their locker rooms after games this Season. And the Summer Olympics is in jeopardy. The precautions, the worries go on and on. But aside from the Coronavirus taking over the universe, there’s the Houston Astro sign stealing scandal that continues to rock MLB. Literally “rock” as opposing pitchers are using their baseball like a rock and throwing at the Houston Astro batters in Cactus League Spring Training games. Perhaps accidentally? Perhaps revenge? Perhaps just bad pitchers…..all of a sudden and mostly when pitching against the Astros? Whatever the case, Open Season…..ehhh, Season Opener will be on March 26, 2020. It should be an interesting Season to say the least.
And that started me thinking and reminiscing about that All American Pastime, the dog days of Summer, when I was just a young lad playing in this rite of passage, the Little League. I was pretty damn good too, played Shortstop, First Base, and Pitched. My batting was above average, I’ve hit a few home runs in my days, and I played in 2 straight years of All Star Little League. I have fond memories of those good ole days. I made friends and learned about sportsmanship. And in the blurs of my memories, I remember there was one kid named Jacky I hung out with for the better part of Summer playing on the same team. We were inseparable. Other kids say we kinda looked alike after awhile, never understood why though. He wasn’t very good in baseball, couldn’t catch, couldn’t hit, and was easily tired just running around the bases! And he had this big pasty head too, looked very out of place in our team photo. Still, I gravitated towards him and we became the best of friends. But alas like all childhood, those days along with those friends, and my best friend Jacky slipped into the annals of yesteryear. Last I heard, he was flipping burgers at a second rate burger joint. Pretty sad story. Such is life. I hope some day to meet up with him and relive those good ole days over a stogie and a snifter of Cognac. Play it again Jacky, through all these years, through the good times and the hard times, we still have baseball!
