This is Bear Territory!  As a Cal Alumni and a Golden Bear, this current financial market statement was not exactly what we were going for.  The market has retreated quite a bit from its recent peak, over 20% to be more precise, the market’s definition of a Bear Market.  No doubt the novel coronavirus started it all and continues to this day, and forecast is that it has just begun.  But slow to act and key indecisions along with mixed messages by the White House exasperated an already nervous and volatile market.  Couple that with Saudi Arabia’s oil price war and it’s a global market catastrophe ripe for another great recession not seen since the late 2000s into 2010s.  For those who think this stuff only affects those with money, it doesn’t, or at least unbeknownst to some, most of us have money in some fashion.  If you have a 401k, you are invested and your 401k will suffer as a result of all this strain on the market.  Even if you really don’t have money anywhere, the cost of just breathing will cost you a lot more!  And for those with money and a lot of it, they will have a little less.  I think they will survive.  Some may have seen the writings on tea leaves and diverted their investments elsewhere.  But there are little “elsewheres” these days that can hide from the one two punch of the coronavirus and oil price wars.  Just waiting for the third and final knock out punch, they always come in threes!  Maybe your granny had something after all, keep your money under your mattress, at least you can still sleep on it!  But like all recessions or high potential for recessions, we will come out of it a better person, or a better investor, or that’s what we humans are programmed to believe…..at least until the next time.  Lesson learned or not learned from the Tech Dot-Com Bubble Burst of the early 2000s, don’t keep all your eggs in one basket, don’t rely on market speculations of riches overnight, and when everything looks too cherry, it’s time to get out!  But we humans tend to never learn from our mistakes.  Doubtless, there will be trillions lost if they haven’t been lost already.  And we are just barely stepping into this Bear’s Den Market.  During the Tech Dot-Com Bubble Bursting, the Nasdaq lost close to 80% of its value in just about a 2 year period!  Fasten your seat belt and hang on, we’ve just got onto the financial roller coaster ride of our time.  This is Bear Territory!
