If you or your client are waiting for a package in the mail through Standard US Postal Service (USPS), you might be checking the USPS.com website for the shipment’s status.  You wait patiently and check the USPS.com website everyday for updates until finally, the status has changed to “Out For Delivery”.  You are overcome with joy, your prized package will be at your doorsteps any moment.  Then you wait and you wait.  You go check the mailbox, the flat letter mail have already arrived, but there is no package!  You go back online and check the USPS.com website and to your surprise and dismay, the status on your package is now showing “Delivered”!  You gasp!  But wait, “where is my package?” you exclaim to yourself just before cursing all that is postal.  “They must have lost my package!” you exclaim again…

In the past few weeks, I’ve been in 2 similar situations, one involving FedEx and one with just USPS.  You would think FedEx has a better tracking system, but if they subcontract their local delivery to the local USPS office, the package is still going through USPS for its last leg to your doorstep.  So in cases like this, the common denominator is still USPS.  But all is not lost.  In fact, your package is probably not lost at all (though that’s still a possibility).  In this past few weeks and for these 2 recent shipments, I’ve come to realize that when the standard postal status on the USPS.com site says the package is “Delivered”, that can mean a number of things.  Also note that if FedEx (or UPS) is using your local USPS for the last leg of the delivery, the shipment status on both FedEx and UPS’s website will be based on what is on USPS’s website, so again, in these scenarios, it all still goes back to USPS.

– When USPS.com site says your standard postal package has been “Delivered”, it actually means either the package is at the local USPS office “to be Delivered” or “foolishly”, it sometimes really means it’s been delivered!  😀

– If the USPS.com site status says the standard postal package is “Out For Delivery” and then a few hours later, the status changes to “Delivered”, the package can either actually be “Delivered”, or it can mean that your normal postal person has been to or has past by your residence already based on a scanning system that only scans a few houses along the postal person’s route, and not the actual package itself.  You see, there are a number of houses along the route with a bar code tag on their mailbox designated as check points for postal people to scan (my residence is one of those houses), and that’s how the postal service keeps track of how far the postal person has gotten along his/her route.  And you can plainly see, that is not a system to track your actual package, but a system that only indicates that your postal person has gotten to or past your house and have “potentially” delivered your package.  A few glaring flaws in that system.  The obvious one is that just because your normal postal person has been to your house does not mean that your package has gotten to your house. The other flaw in the system is the fact that when the USPS.com status for your package says “Out For Delivery”, your package can either be actually with your normal postal person with whom the already flawed USPS tracking system is in use (per the above description), OR, even worse, the package is actually on another delivery truck!  So once your normal postal person has gotten past your house along his/her delivery route, if the other delivery truck is the one who actually has your package, you may or may not get your package on that same day if that second delivery truck is behind schedule!  And at the very least, they will never be in sync.

The rule of thumb, if the USPS.com site status shows your standard postal package has been “Delivered” and you don’t see it, wait a few days after the USPS.com site status shows your package has been “Delivered” before taking action.  In all likelihood, your package has only fell victim to the above explanation of how flawed the USPS tracking system works.
