WingsLOG March 8, 2020
Spent the morning and early afternoon in my old hood in Sacramento, CA today. Had lunch in Old Sacramento where a number of nice restaurants can be found and prices are decent compared to here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
As an aside, 2-Hour parking for only $3.50! I pay that just for the time it takes me to parallel park here in San Francisco, LOL! We ate at Hoppy’s Railyard Kitchen & Hopgarden. Like most places in Old Sacramento, the front facade of this restaurant was Old Western Revival style, fun vibe, clean and inviting, but looked more like a motel/hotel than a restaurant. And aside from the sign, there was little about it that recalls the “railyard” in its name. And the decor inside was the same, a bit bland and more like an anywhere USA hotel restaurant. I thought the decor was retro 80’s where there were no interior design of note. And where we sat, it reminded me of a Denny’s (sorry)! Still nothing about it spoke of the “railyard” in its name. Nonetheless, both the host and waitress were very pleasant and the food was good. Keep in mind, my rating goes from “hate it” to “good” to “blew my socks off!” Most of my reviews will fall in that “good” category which is basically a “recommend” vote that covers a lot of ground. Seldom do I rate a restaurant “hate it” and even less often will I rate it “blew my socks off!” So “good” is…well, as good as it gets! LOL! Because “blew my socks off” happens only once in a blue moon. The menu choice was limited, probably because it was a Sunday Brunch day, but looking at their website, their normal lunch and dinner menu is not much larger albeit more variety. Both the beer and wine menus were much longer than the food menu! …..ehhh, and that’s just fine with me! LOL I guess that’s where the “Hoppy’s” and “Hopgarden” in its name comes from…but still no reminder of a “Railyard!”
And I think that’s a missed opportunity when you have a restaurant in Old Sacramento, “Railyard” is part of your name, and Old Sacramento is known for its Railway Museum and other old western relics, patrons expect some connection with that old Western Railway past, makes the ambience a lot more fun, interesting, and visually in the right time period. Hint to the owner, plenty of museum quality Railway art and photography prints including those from your own backyard can be found and purchased at my website https://trains.wingsdomain.com 😀 We had a Calamari appetizer which was again “good”, plenty of tentacles which is the part with the distinct chewy and lightly crunchy texture, and is the best part of Calamari IMO. By the way, Calamari is kinda our/my unofficial specialty, we’ve had Calamari appetizers from just about every restaurant that offers it, it’s what we do! LOL. I had their House Biscuits and Gravy which was as the name would imply, biscuits and gravy along with 2 strips of bacon, egg, and hash brown. And a pint of their house brew IPA to wash it all down. It was plenty for a good filling/not-overfilling lunch. There were 3 in our party, my wife had a shrimp taco with a cup of tea, and my son had a pizza with a cup of tea. Pizza looks like your best bet here. The total came out to $78.80, round it off to $100 with tips, I’m a good tipper!
